It is important to identify a bad needle and reject it rather than choosing a bad one for being unaware. This is needed considering a bad needle can not only ruin the fabric you intend to stitch but wreck havoc on your sewing machine.

There are a few characteristics of a bad needle you should be aware of and they are

  • A bad needle is of inferior quality and it is very evident to the naked eye
  • The tip of a bad needle is blunt. This causes problems like “skipped stitches” which do not look good on clothes which have been stitched for some special occasion
  • A bad needle causes damage to expensive machine parts and sewn garments.
  • This needle also puts undue pressure on the sewing machine thus reducing its life.

Determine The Proper Tension For Your Sewing Machine

Determining Proper Tension

A sewing machine creates stitches by interlocking the bobbin thread with the needle thread. When the needle goes down into your fabric, a hook catches the needle thread and wraps the bobbin thread around it creating what's called a lockstitch.

When your sewing machine's tension is out of balance, the result will be weak seams that are loose or pucker, and thread that breaks. It's not pretty.

If you don't feel comfortable making these precise adjustments, call your dealer. Bring in your machine and have your dealer walk you through it. Next time, you can do it yourself.
